Saratoga - 8/9/2014
Race 1-1ST #4 WRAITH2ND #1 GEM CITY GAL3RD #7 SILVER UNION#4 WRAITH moved aggressively to reach the front off the far turn last time out before getting collared late. She now cuts back a furlong and faces a field that’s slightly weaker than the one she did last time out. There are no fewer than three rivals who figure to show some early energy in this bunch, which should ensure a proper setup for this daughter of Ghostzapper. #1 GEM CITY GAL returns off a brief layoff after setting the pace and tiring late when last seen against N1X optional claimers. She has a great deal of early speed, and once again has the rider aboard who led her to victory back in December at Aqueduct. If she is left alone on the front end, her chances of going the distance will increase exponentially. #7 SILVER UNION dominated softer competition last time out, proving that the gigantic class drop she took paid off. She was claimed out of that race by Mike Maker, who has quietly had a solid meet here and picked up his 6th win of the meet on Friday. The outside post is ideal given this filly’s running style, as she can stalk the pace and pounce when ready.Race 2-1st #3 NICHOLSON2ND #7 MADD EXCHANGE3RD #5 IRELAND’S EYE#3 NICHOLSON goes 2nd off a layoff after racing wide and rallying from off the pace last time out. He gets a bit of class relief today and the addition of blinkers should have him a bit sharper early. Trainer Leah Gyarmati is 17% with dirt sprinters adding blinkers, good for a $2.44 ROI and the pace in this race should be conducive to a late runner. You’ll get value here in a race where the favorite is questionable. #7 MADD EXCHANGE takes the biggest class drop in racing for trainer Todd Pletcher in his 2nd start off a layoff. He narrowly missed last time out at Monmouth in his first start off a brief break that afternoon. Clearly, his last two races were good enough to win this, and Pletcher is 23% with dirt sprinters at Saratoga dropping from MSW races into sellers. Surprisingly, those winners are good for just a $0.81 ROI and this colt will be similarly overbet. #5 IRELAND’S EYE switches surfaces for a barn that took the Friday nightcap with a runner switching from turf to dirt. Trainer John Terranova is 28% overall with maiden sprinters going turf-to-dirt, good for a strong $2.33 ROI. This colt has the speed to get control from the outset.Race 3-1st #5 STORM2ND #10 MAKE A DECISION3RD #9 JONRAH#5 STORM has proven he has a bright future on turf, running his record to 3-3 in two recent outings. He showed a new dimension last time out when he rated farther off the pace than had been customary. The runner-up in his last start was going first off a positive claim by Michelle Nevin, and this gelding handled him easily while covering the widest trip of any horse in the field. This is a relatively soft N1X and he is poised to handle the move to open company. #10 MAKE A DECISION found serious traffic trouble in deep stretch of his last start, which was his first off a brief layoff. He is a late runner who’ll benefit if the pace is strong and he probably should have cleared this condition in his last start. If the top pick falters, then this colt is the likeliest winner. #9 JONRAH goes 2nd off a claim after finishing a clear third in a N1X on opening weekend. He made the only off the pace move in that field of nine that featured a slow pace. However, he sat a perfect trip on the fence and was the best of a bad lot of also-rans. Nonetheless, he can make noise today if the pace heats up.Race 4-1st #2 TWO WEEKS OFF2ND #8 DADA MAINO3RD #3 REQUITE#2 TWO WEEKS OFF is by 15% debut sire Harlan’s Holiday and hails from the red-hot barn of Todd Pletcher. This colt is the 2nd foal to race of an unraced dam, and his lone sibling to start is a winner. His dam is a half to Grade II dirt sprinter Royal Haven and 2YO graded stakes winner Belterra. The rail draw is a negative, but the workouts here look very strong. #8 DADA MAINO is the other Pletcher entrant in this field and this colt has an excellent pedigree. He’s by freshman sire Super Saver, who already has 3 debut winners in his first crop. His unraced dam is kin to Grade I winner Paynter and has dropped two winners from four foals to race. The outside post is ideal for a first timer and can put him in an ideal stalking position from the opening bell. #3 REQUITE is by sizzling freshman sire Warrior’s Reward, who has a staggering six debut winners! This colt’s dam is a multiple stakes-placed dirt sprinter and she has dropped 2 winners from as many tor ace. His dam is also kin to a Grade III placed dirt router and this barn has 2 winners in the last four years with Saratoga debuting 2YOs.Race 5-1st #4 DR DISCO2ND #1A BE BULLISH3RD #9 JOE MOOCH#4 DR DISCO was a game 2nd last time out behind a wire-to-wire winner and was claimed for 25k that afternoon by Bruce Levine. This barn is 27% with Saratoga dirt starters going first off the claim over the last five years, good for a $3.00 ROI. While this 6YO veteran has plenty of early speed, he can rate in the opening stages in this relatively weak 20k event. #1A BE BULLISH is taking a huge class drop after checking in 2nd in a 50k event earlier at this meet. He has yet to win in nine tries over this oval, but has spent the majority of his career facing considerably better rivals. Though this barn is struggling at the meet, the back class this gelding possesses is too significant to overlook. #9 JOE MOOCH is switching surfaces and cutting back in distance for trainer Tom Albertrani. Over the last five years, Albertrani is 21% with cutbacks switching surfaces from turf to dirt, good for a $3.05 ROI. The return to sprinting should make him a late threat in a race that has a decent bit of early speed.Race 6-1ST #10 ROYAL SQUEEZE2ND #9 KING OF NEW YORK3rd #3 DUBAI SKY#10 ROYAL SQUEEZE is by Wildcat Heir and worked sharply at the OBS March sale prior to getting purchased for 310k. Progeny of Wildcat Heir win their turf debuts at a rate of 13% and their first starts overall at a 20% clip. He is kin to turf stakes winner Callmethesqueeze and has two other siblings who have scored on turf. Trainer Chad Brown is 23% with 2YO firsters on the weeds at Saratoga over the last five years, good for a $2.51 ROI. #9 KING OF NEW YORK is by 24% debut sire Street Boss, whose progeny win their turf debuts at a strong rate of 26%. This colt’s 2nd dam was 6x turf winner Camella and her dam was a 2-time winner as a juvenile. Her best foal to race is Waterway Run, who won the Beaugay earlier this year. Thus, there’s plenty of turf pedigree in play here for a barn that’s long overdue to get rolling. #3 DUBAI SKY was scratched here on opening weekend prior to the start of his anticipated debut. He is a full brother of Twirling Candy, who won multiple graded stakes races on the turf in his day. He is also kin to turf winner Ethnic Dance, but hails from a barn that does not emphasize winning early with its juveniles.Race 7-1st #7 GRAN THE MAN2ND #4 GROUPTHINK3RD #5 NATIVE HERO#7 GRAN THE MAN was an impressive maiden winner in his 2nd career start, as he took a step forward off an encouraging debut. The 5th place finisher in that race has since returned to win, improving his Beyer Speed Figure by a whopping 39 points. The 8th place finisher improved his figure by 22 points and the runner-up ran a better race in his next start as well. Trainer Christophe Clement is 27% in the last three years with dirt sprinters coming off of maiden wins, good for a $2.01 ROI. #4 GROUPTHINK was a listless 3rd at 17-10 last time out here on opening weekend. He no goes 7 furlongs, which will help him hit his stride in this spot. Trainer Chad Brown is 30% with older state-bred dirt sprinters at the Spa over the last five years, good for a $2.19 ROI. Whether this colt will ever be as good on a dry track as he was in his maiden win remains to be seen. #5 NATIVE HERO was stuck behind a moderate pace last time out when he wound up 2nd against open company. He has been freshened since and retains the riding services of Joel Rosario in this spot. If the pace boils over, he’ll be in line to benefit.Race 8-1st #2 ANALYSIS2ND #1 POINT ROLL3RD #7 LAST RUNThe two turf races that #2 ANALYSIS has run this year for George Weaver are good enough to take this thing. He was 2nd in his last outing after battling from start to finish. The pace took its toll on the other runners who raced close to it, which elevates this gelding’s performance. A moderate pace is expected in this field, which will enable him to stay in stalk and pounce range from the outset. There’s no real explanation for the race that #1 POINT ROLL ran last time out, as he completely stopped late after launching a wide move to reach contention around the far turn. He was away from the gate slowly as well and that worked against him right from the opening bell. If he bounces back to his big maiden win, he’ll be impossible to beat, as he has shown flashes of serious ability on multiple occasions. #7 LAST RUN is kin to turf winner Vicki’s Dancer and is deserving of another opportunity on the weeds. He was wide much of the way in a tough conditioned claimer downstate and is now in considerably better form. The increased speed he’s shown of late will be a major asset in this field.Race 9-1st #10 BALLERINA BELLE2ND #2 KISS ME LOLA3RD #1 RICHIES SWEETHEARTIn a race that is absolutely packed with speed, #10 BALLERINA BELLE figures to get a big pace setup for trainer Linda Rice. She won a race on Friday with this pilot, and this filly was a fast-closing 3rd when allowed to fall too far off the pace last time. It will behoove Ortiz to keep her a tad more involved early, and this filly will offer more value today in a race that is quite contentious on paper. #2 KISS ME LOLA was 2nd in the same race that ‘Belle exits, and this daughter of Shakespeare had an excellent trip that afternoon. Her inside post should facilitate a ground-saving trip and she has run her best races at this trip. If this race stays intact, she’ll get a huge pace setup. #1 RICHIES SWEETHEART is the quickest of them all in this field as she ships in for trainer Larry Rivelli. The meet’s top pilot is aboard today and should be able to get her to the early lead. Her recent win shows that she can handle turf without issue and that makes her a major threat for top honors in this spot.Race 10-1st #2 SEEK AGAIN2ND #1 SILVER MAX3RD #3 JACK MILTON#2 SEEK AGAIN shortens up from the 10 furlong Manhattan, where he moved aggressively at the tiring pacesetter on the far turn. He wound up 3rd as the favorite in that event and now goes a mile in a race that should feature a strong early pace. This son of Speightstown put forth a prolonged bid when narrowly beaten by two time Horse of the Year Wise Dan two starts back at Churchill. That effort showed this colt is capable of winning a race such as this. #1 SILVER MAX is the one to beat as he goes 2nd off a layoff after winning the Firecracker in wire-to-wire fashion. He is the one to catch today and will be very dangerous if he gets command in the opening stages. He’ll have #5 SAYAAD to deal with early, but is quick enough to handle that rival. #3 JACK MILTON is back in NY after making a failed trip to California for the Shoemaker Mile. His win in the Poker stamped him a top flight miler, and he has blossomed this year using different tactics. Things should set up well for an off the pace type, and it’s tough to argue with what this barn is doing at this meet.Race 11-1st #7 TROPHEE2ND #6 FORENSIC3RD #3 CORONETTE#7 TROPHEE ships in from France for trainer Christophe Clement and jockey Julien Leparoux. She debuted against solid company last year, running into a pair of subsequent winners including Shamkala, who won a Group III earlier this year. She wound up a neck back of Imperiator at 2nd asking and that filly is now group placed as well. Clement is 25% with turf routers shipping in from overseas, good for a $2.65 ROI so there’s a lot to like about this filly. #6 FORENSIC was a fast-closing fourth when last seen here in a race run at a moderate early clip. She has improved as a 3 year-old and was a game 3rd two back when a few lengths behind the incredibly talented Crown Queen. If the top pick falters, this is the next likeliest winner. #3 CORONETTE was a wide 5th behind Crown Queen when last seen and that was her first start off a lengthy layoff. This will be her 2nd start of 2014, and trainer Michael Matz is 18% with turf routers going 2nd off of layoffs ($2.25 ROI). An improved run is expected in here.SARATOGA 2014 STATS: 190-43-32-27 $308.10

SPOT PLAYS
For Saturday
| TRACK | (RACE) HORSE, MORNING LINE |
orses I recommend using in multi-race wagers are in bold font. Good luck!
Race 1: 4 – 1 – 2 – 7
WRAITH should benefit from an early speed duel that I expect GEM CITY GAL to get the best of. ISLAND CANDY has worked well to prepare for her return and is certainly capable of rounding out the trifecta.
Race 2: 7 – 5– 2 – 3
MADD EXCHANGE will be heavily bet but is the likely winner of this Maiden Claimer. IRELAND’S EYE is going turf to dirt for Terranova and is expected to improve; must use in the multi-race plays. James Lawrence’s first time starter STAR ACADEMY interests me. The son of Malibu Moon could come out running in his first start and I will be using underneath.
Race 3: 3 – 5 – 8– 4
ADIRONDACK DANCER makes her third start off a layoff for Linda Rice and gets the nod; patterns imply a good effort coming today. STORM is a versatile runner who has won last two starts; dangerous but will be a short price. IRON POWER might appreciate the firm ground and will be competitive on the front end; strong contender.
Race 4: 6 – 8 – 3– 2
CALL DADDY has been training very well leading up to his debut; will hope this one comes out running. Expect DADA MAINO and REQUITE to be live as well. I generally don’t use horses making their first start on the rail on top and will have TWO WEEKS OFF underneath.
Race 5: 1/1A– 4 – 3 – 9
The race shapes up well for Jacobson’s late running pair, of which I prefer the consistent BE BULLISH. Trainer Bruce Levine drops DR. DISCO off the claim and he is the main threat. STAR OF NEW YORK and JOE MOOCH can light up the board, use in exotics.
Race 6: 7 – 8 – 1 – 9
DESIGNED FOR WAR and ZIPPITY CITY are both bred to like the turf and have shown some zip in the mornings. Castellano gets the top spot but both should run well. I will be using KING OF NEW YORK and TARIFF with the hopes that one or both can hit the board at a price. Both are bred to like the turf and run well early.
Race 7: 1 – 4 – 6 – 7
Expect to see STATION CHIEF and GRAN THE MAN pushing the pace in this race, setting the stage for GROUPTHINK and SIOUX coming for home. GROUPTHINK needed his last race but SIOUX gets the nod at the 7f distance.
Race 8: 1 – 2 – 4– 8
POINT ROLL’s best efforts came on the firm turf, which is what we are expecting on Saturday. ANALYSIS should be tough for Weaver and is the main threat. ARCHER HILL or BIRCHWOOD ROAD round out the exotics.
Race 9: 1– 10 – 12 – 2
RICHIES SWEETHEART will have plenty of company up front early but she seems to have a knack for getting to the wire first (5 for 11 lifetime). Will be using KISS ME LOLA and BALLERINA BELLE and MIZZEN MOON in multi-race wagers just in case she can’t. Moon makes third start in form cycle and should fit in here vs. winners. Lola gives the impression that she should have won her last.
Race 10: 1 – 2– 4 – 3
Consistent, classy favorite SILVER MAX gets the nod in today’s feature – The Fourstardave. His experience at the distance makes him the choice over SEEK AGAIN. Trainer Brian Lynch enters two into the race and DORSETT obtains the services of JR Velazquez who has won this race on eight separate occasions. JACK MILTON has run very well this year and should be used underneath; would liked to have seen a little more in the Shoemaker.
Race 11: 3 – 5 – 11 – 4
Based prior performance, CORONETTE should graduate today but I will be spreading here with EASTON ARCH, CORINTHIAN WIND and SIREN’S ASSAULT.
