    • Race 1-
      1ST #7 TOP STRIKER
      2ND #1 KINGDOM
      3RD #3 EASY REACH
#7 TOP STRIKER moved prematurely last time out in the Jonathan Kiser Novice. That led to him tiring late and finishing deep in the pack. He was, however, returning to jumping that afternoon and should benefit from having that race behind him. Some of his prior jump efforts would win this thing easily. #1 KINGDOMmoves into the barn of Elizabeth Voss for his 2nd start off a brief layoff. He was a fast-closing 2nd at odds of 10-1 last time out and should improve today given the expected solid early pace. #3 EASY REACH is the one to catch as he exits a 2nd place finish at Parx. His efforts earlier in 2014 were solid, and he should have few impediments on his journey to the early lead.
      Race 2-
      1st #1A SKY CREW
      2ND #3 VALE RIDGE
      3RD #4 SUN AND MOON
#1A SKY CREW is drawn well on the outside as she returns to dirt for trainer Rick Schosberg. Her 2014 debut came in a turf sprint earlier at this meet where the early pace was very strong. That worked against this daughter of Sky Mesa, as she wound up chasing the pace and tiring badly late. Schosberg is 3 for his last 18 with sprinters going turf to dirt ($3.34 ROI) and this filly faced some heavies in her four dirt tries last year. #3 VALE RIDGE is bred for dirt and finally gets an opportunity over it for new trainer Butch Reid. She has two siblings who’ve won on dirt, and Reid is 2-5 over the last five years with new arrivals to his barn racing on dirt and returning off of 100-200 day breaks ($3.23 ROI). #4 SUN AND MOON had some brushes with victories over the winter and spring, only to face the summer with a winless record. She’s now getting some class relief, which will greatly aid her cause, and having the meet’s top pilot aboard will as well. However, she is very difficult to trust and will offer no value today.
      Race 3-
      1. #5 NEAT PACKAGE
      2ND #1 SABBATICAL
      3RD #7 HIGH HEEL KITTEN
#5 NEAT PACKAGE found serious trouble around the far turn and into the stretch of her last outing. She wound up getting shuffled back and wrapped up late by veteran Edgar Prado, which led to a 9th place finish beaten a baker’s dozen. This increased distance should suit her nicely, and veteran trainer Jonathan Sheppard is 4 for his last 12 with Saratoga starters racing on turf at distances ranging from 10-13 furlongs ($5.70 ROI). #1 SABBATICAL is stretching out for trainer Shug McGaughey after showing little last time out on dirt. This filly is kin to 11 furlong Grade I winner Imagining as well as 2 mile stakes placed Reflecting. That portends some affinity for longer trips, and should have her in the mix in the waning stages. #7 HIGH HEEL KITTEN hails from a barn that is 3 for its last 10 with turf routers at Saratoga exiting maiden wins ($2.50 ROI). This daughter of Kitten’s Joy won on a boggy turf course last time out at Aqueduct, so any moisture in the course would only help. DIRT: 3-6-5
      Race 4-
      1ST #3 TAHOE TIGRESS
      2ND #1 CARAMEAWAY
      3RD #2 LITTLE ROCKET
#3 TAHOE TIGRESS returns off a short layoff after beating open N2X optional claimers when last seen at Belmont. This daughter of Stephen Got Even was a strong fourth behind NY bred sensation La Verdad two starts back after spending most of that race well off the gold rail. She ran respectably in this race last year and will be in line to benefit from the expected race flow today. Obviously, a contested pace will aid her cause. #1 CARAMEAWAY was close to the white hot pace in the Critical Eye in her last start. She tired late after chasing outside, and that put her against the track profile as well. There are some other pace players to her outside, but this daughter of Lawyer Ron is perfectly capable of rating early. The time away seems to have done her some good, if her recent workouts give any indication. The last time #2 LITTLE ROCKET was seen on this circuit she was handed her fourth straight defeat back in February. She has since shown marked improvement for Mike Ferraro at Finger Lakes and now returns to the Spa, where she was victorious almost a year ago against optional claimers. She will be in line to benefit from the race flow in here and should be a fair price.
      Race 5-
      1ST #8 LADY DAPHNE
      2ND #10 SALUDA
      3RD #3 THE LEWIS DINNER
#8 LADY DAPHNE is by Harlan’s Holiday, whose progeny win on debut at a rate of 15%. This filly is the 2nd foal to race out of a dam who was a stakes winner as a juvenile. She is kin to Grade II winner Too Much Bling, and trainer Chad Brown is 4 for his last 12 with NY bred 2YO firsters, good for a $2.91 ROI. One of those winners came here on Sunday when Market Conduct took the opener. #10 SALUDA ran a solid race on debut, as she rushed up to contest the pace after breaking a tad slowly from the rail. She wound up dumping her rider at the start last time and now draws a far more favorable outside post position. Expect her to be involved from the start for a barn that picked up its first win here on Sunday. #3 THE LEWIS DINNER was a rallying second on debut for the high percentage Rudy Rodriguez barn. He hits at a 31% clip with 2YO second timers on dirt, but those winners are good for just a $1.37 ROI. That has to make you concerned about the probable odds for this daughter of Posse.
      Race 6-
      1ST #4 BLOFELD
      2ND #7 BINGLEY
      3RD #5 MALIBU WARRIOR
#4 BLOFELD is by Quality Road, who has two debut winners in his first crop. This colt is the 5th foal to race out of a dam who was a multiple stakes winner sprinting on dirt. He was purchased for 225k at the Fasig-Tipton March sale after working :10, which showed that he has a great deal of speed. His dam is kin to 2YO stakes winner Grand Minstrel, so the win early influence is quite clear. His last workout portends serious early speed. #7 BINGLEY is by Medaglia d’Oro, a 12% debut sire and is the first foal to race out of a dam who was a winner as a juvenile. This colt’s 2nd dam produced Grade I winner Jimmy Creed and graded stakes winner Pussycat Doll. Though this barn has struggled with 2YO firsters at Saratoga, it is perfectly capable of having one ready to roll on debut.#5 MALIBU WARRIOR is by high percentage debut sire Malibu Moon and is out of a Grade II winner on synthetic surfaces. This filly’s 2nd dam produced Marylebone, who won the Grade I Matron as a juvenile in 2004. She is the “other” Pletcher in this field, but did snag a whopping 500k at the Keeneland sale 11 months ago.
      Race 7-
      1st #4 AL’S GAL
      2ND #6 WINE BURGLAR
      3RD #5 EUROKAY BY ME
#4 AL’S GAL was claimed for 40k in June and freshened to point to Saratoga. Trainer Bruce Levine is 4 for his last 8 with turfers going first off the claim at Saratoga, good for a $2.50 ROI. This filly made a bold late move in her last start, and that race was run at a relatively moderate early pace. Should things heat up in the opening stages today, she’ll be a major late threat. #6 WINE BURGLAR is back in for a tag for the first time since she broke her maiden on Belmont Stakes week. She moved prematurely in her last start before getting collared right on the wire, and her style makes her vulnerable in such a scenario. This trainer and jockey combined for two wins on Wednesday and are well represented here. #5 EUROKAY BY ME stretches out to a route of ground after pushing the pace and tiring late going 7 furlongs last time out. She will be close to the pace from the outset today and the pace in this race should be relatively moderate. Some of her best turf races make her a win candidate.
      Race 8-
      1st #2 TAKE DOWN TWO
      2ND #4 IMMORTAL EYES
      3RD #6 PHOTON
#2 TAKE DOWN TWO goes first off the claim by Chip Dutrow, who had a runner snag the place dough here last week. That was the best performance any of his trainees have posted since he returned to the profession earlier this summer. This son of Not For Love chased the pace last time out while the eventual winner sat back and made one run from off the pace. Things should set up better for this veteran in here and he’ll be overlooked at the windows. #4 IMMORTAL EYES is the one to catch as he drops in class again for trainer David Jacobson. He set a soft pace on a slow track before tiring last time out, but now gets journeyman jockey Corey Lanerie in his 5th start over a surface where he has been in the money in each start. Look for him to take control from the outset. #6 PHOTON has won two in a row courtesy of huge pace setups and now goes first off a claim by Rudy Rodriguez. The quicker they go in the early stages, the better for this gelding, but you likely won’t get the 5-1 that he was in his last start.
      Race 9-
      1st #1 LADY CANDIDATE
      2ND #8 ONE TIME ONLY
      3RD #5 DISTORTED BEAUTY
#1 LADY CANDIDATE switches surfaces in her first start for trainer Mike Maker. He took her for 20k in June at Belmont and has given her some time off after she was scratched from a race taken off the turf last month. Maker is a tremendous 32% with turf routers going first off of claims, good for a $3.36 ROI. She has had limited opportunities on the weeds in her 12 race career, and they all came for barns that are far less proficient on the weeds than this 25% shooter. #8 ONE TIME ONLY stretches out in distance after checking in a game 2nd last time out on closing day. She will be forwardly placed today on the stretchout and is a winner at today’s distance. The top pick will be her main competition in the early stages, and the fact that this Tom Proctor trainee has a more aggressive pilot aboard leads you to believe she’ll be the pacesetter. #5 DISTORTED BEAUTY has run two very strong races in a row since moving to turf, and effectively stretched out to a route of ground in her last start. She made a nice late move from off the pace and now faces a field that’s a tad weaker on paper than was the one she faced that afternoon. If the pace is contested, she will benefit.
      Race 10-
      1st #1 TARPY’S GOAL
      2ND #8 THE BIG DELUXE
      3RD #3 REGULUS
Trainer Dale Romans is protecting #1 TARPY’S GOAL from the claim box as he returns off a brief freshening this afternoon. He has run well against significantly tougher competition throughout his career, and now cuts back to a distance at which he was a game 2nd three starts back at Keeneland. Romans is 19% with dirt starters cutting back from routes to sprints and should be on the move today with a decent pace expected. #8 THE BIG DELUXE set a very strong pace in his last start and appeared to be on his way to victory in mid-stretch. The final sixteenth got a tad dicey and he wound up getting collared right on the wire. He’s now drawn favorably outside and figures to be a major player from the opening bell. The fact that he is in strong form cannot be overlooked and he’ll still be a square price today. #3 REGULUS missed by a beak in his last start after battling from the outset. He returned from a layoff that afternoon none the worse for wear and will be in position to move forward 2nd off the bench this afternoon.

BEST BET: Distorted Beauty (9th race)
      First Race

      1. Address Unknown2. Bluegrass Summer3. Awesome Pearl

ADDRESS UNKNOWN has really turned things around since returned as a jumper and put on Lasix, winning both starts decisively; has enough positional speed to be within striking range of expected pacesetter EASY REACH. Among eight that return from the J. Kiser three weeks ago, BLUEGRASS SUMMER flattened out after a mid-race move to finish behind longshot winner AWESOME PEARL, KINGDOM and SPORTY, but seems eligible to move forward second time over the course, as was the case when he won here in 2013.
      Second Race

      1. Sun and Moon2. Magsamelia3. Vale Ridge

Away better than four months since finishing out of the money for the first time, SUN AND MOON returns with a switch to the leading rider; she is the only one to have gained any appreciable ground in the stretch on dirt. MAGSAMELIA has squandered three consecutive leads to wind up second; alert breaker will be tested early by SKY CREW, who is suspect at this distance after losing ground late five times at 5 1/2 furlongs. VALE RIDGE is turf to dirt coming off a layoff for new trainer who wins at 20% overall; showed ability in two grass placings with different running styles.
      Third Race

      1. High Heel Kitten2. Tap Twenty One3. Sabbatical

HIGH HEEL KITTEN improved in two races at Belmont when stretched out to 1 1/4 miles, finishing third to recent Waya Stakes winner Cat's Claw early at the meet, and returning in July to graduate nicely; handles rain-softened ground. TAP TWENTY ONE has been second in three straight starts on synthetic and turf, and has been freshened since the last try against odds-on Flashy Gal; may have been best in sloppy off-the-turfer here as a 2-year-old. SABBATICAL has improved marginally in two starts at 3 since going on Lasix; moves up if this allowance route is switched to the main track at 1 1/8 miles.
      Fourth Race

      1. Tahoe Tigress2. Get Gorgeous3. Little Rocket

TAHOE TIGRESS has posted six of her seven wins in one-turn races, the majority at Belmont, where her fastest Beyers have been delivered; decent try finishing fifth in this race last year, lukewarm nod. The late-blooming GET GORGEOUS has won three times at age 8, including both starts for current trainer; handles any footing. LITTLE ROCKET fits off her recent form at Finger Lakes, and two horses that had last raced there got the money here Monday; won at the Spa last year.
      Fifth Race

      1. The Lewis Dinner2. Bar of Gold3. Go Babe

THE LEWIS DINNER rallied wide into the lane and just missed in debut opening day, matching the Beyer par (67) for this kind of maiden sprint; experience edge. BAR OF GOLD is unveiled by owner-breeeder with six meet wins including runaway first-time starter Hard to Stay Notgo; promising local works include bullet half-mile July 23. GO BABE and fast-working DUNN LISTENING were purchased at Ocala earlier this year for many times the stud fee of their respective sires; watch the board.
      Sixth Race

      1. Blofeld2. Malibu Warrior3. Banksy

Todd Pletcher looks to continue on the path to world domination with BLOFELD, who fetched nine times the stud fee of freshman sire Quality Road in March after working a furlong in 10 seconds; tipped hand with bullet work from gate (ranked 1/66) last week.MALIBU WARRIOR a $500,000 yearling buy also readied by leading trainer, and has been breezing here since early June; first runner out of Grade 2-winning mare. BANKSY didn't get off alertly when fourth in Polytrack bow to Conquest Tsunami, who is now 3 for 3 after blowout wins in Victoria and Colin Stakes at Woodbine; filly is in light getting weight from colts.
      Seventh Race

      1. Wine Burglar2. Al's Gal3. Lady Marian

WINE BURGLAR has run three races of similar quality since a short layoff and barn change, any of which are competitive as she drops slightly from a close second in starter allowance worth $8,000 more than this race; okay with some give in the course. AL'S GAL has been freshened nearly seven weeks since claimed from runner-up finish first time for this price; beaten choice won off longer absence at Aqueduct only time ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. LADY MARIAN is the lone entrant never to have run previously for as low as $40,000; figures close with ROCK N COZY (1 for 26) in event of a switch to dirt at seven furlongs.
      Eighth Race

      1. Photon2. Sense of Peace3. Broad Rule

Among four last-out claims in this competitive dash are PHOTON and SENSE OF PEACE, who were one-two in their recent clash as they transferred their previous good form from Belmont. Photon ran down a loose Sense of Peace that day, and projects for better setup with the latter under the gun from rail and facing early pressure from STORM PURSUIT and $1.15 million earner IMMORTAL EYES. A contested pace helps BROAD RULE, who started off the year winning a stake and continues to slide down the ranks, as well as TAKE DOWN TWO, 103-start veteran who was on very short rest when close to Photon five weeks ago.
      Ninth Race

      1. Distorted Beauty2. One Time Only3. Caribean Beat

The lightly raced and improving DISTORTED BEAUTY handled switch to grass rallying from far back for second-out maiden win, showed better tactical speed taking N1x condition in the mud, and nearly made it three in a row slicing into front-end winner's margin at this level; entitled to keep moving forward second time going long, remains one to beat if race shortens to seven furlongs on dirt.ONE TIME ONLY stretches out with good chance to control the pace, provided she is hustled to clear from outside; sharp try in last vs. Invading Humor, who returned to win $85K allowance here. CARIBEAN BEAT is rounding back to form after mild rally for third behind top pick; two wins on non-firm turf.
      Tenth Race

      1. The Big Deluxe2. Regulus3. Tarpy's Goal

Four of these sprinters put up Beyers of 95 or better in one of their last two starts, among them THE BIG DELUXE, who just failed to last at 6 1/2 furlongs first time over the track; he has won five straight races on fast dirt at Thursday's distance since last fall.REGULUS was given two months off after becoming eligible for these $25K starter allowances with big-figure score, and returned to chase slower fractions than what The Big Deluxe posted earlier on July 25; would've been the choice at seven furlongs. TARPY'S GOAL hasn't won at the distance, but has 3-for-4 record in one-turn dirt races this year that includes blowout win for $50K with a 99; won Fla-bred stake fresh at 3.

Saratoga - 8/13/2014

Race 1-
1st #5 SYROS
2ND #7 SELECTION SUNDAY
3RD #6 WANTAN
#5 SYROS was 3rd in his return to jumping when last seen on July 23. Many times jumpers need a race to get used to hurdling again, and this gelding can easily bridge the deficit between him and #7 SELECTION SUNDAY. That son of Harlan’s Holiday checked in 2nd in yet another improved effort for trainer Jack Fisher. He has a bit more tactical speed than the top pick and that can help him get involved from the outset. #6 WANTAN goes 3rd ofa layoff after falling too far behind early in his last start. He has a proven history of jumping successfully and is a candidate to rebound in his 3rd start off a layoff.
Race 2-
1st #6 BROADWAY BAY
2ND #5 WARRIOR’S HERO
3RD #2 ZIGGY MOONDUST
#6 BROADWAY BAY was away from the gate slowly on debut and spotted the field a great deal of ground from the opening bell. He wound up making a strong late move while wide on the course around the far turn and into the stretch. The expectation is that he’ll move forward with that race behind him, and he figures to offer more value than #5 WARRIOR’S HERO. That son of Majestic Warrior took a huge jump in class last time out when 4th against open MSW rivals at 9 panels. The return to sprinting will prove beneficial for this gelding, and this cold barn is sure to get rolling at some point here at the Spa. #2 ZIGGY MOONDUST is a 2nd timer who debuted sprinting on the turf last month at Belmont. He chased the pace and tired late, but trainer Linda Rice is 33% with 2ndtimers in MSW races sprinting on dirt ($2.79 ROI). This gelding is a half to Daisysgonnamakeit, so he should improve on dirt.
Race 3-
1st #5 DADDY’S LIL SAINT
2ND #2 SHERIFFA
3RD #6 THE LOST TIGRESS
#5 DADDY’S LIL SAINT cuts back in distance and adds blinkers for trainer Bruce Levine. Over the last five years, Levine is 36% with dirt starters cutting back in distance at Saratoga, good for a $3.35 ROI. The blinkers going on should keep her closer in the early stages, and she will get some pace to run at in the waning stages today. #2 SHERIFFA is one of the main pace players as she makes her Saratoga debut for a barn that rarely starts horses on the main track at this abbreviated meet. She improved last time out with the addition of blinkers, and you can expect her to be within range from the outset of this affair. #6 THE LOST TIGRESS switches surfaces after showing little last time out on the weeds. Her maiden win was quite impressive, albeit against a soft field of MSW runners. Trainer Charlton Baker is 36% with sprinters on this circuit moving from turf to dirt, good for a solid $3.23 ROI.
Race 4-
1st #9 ONE PENNY PIECE
2ND #2 JANE’S HEIR
3RD #8 EDIE
DIRT:
1ST #10 GINNY’S GREY
2ND #2 JANE’S HEIR
3RD #3 AMULAY
An iffy forecast puts this race staying on turf in doubt. If on the grass, #9 ONE PENNY PIECE looms a major player in her 2nd start off a brief layoff. She did most of the hard running last time out when 2nd against similar 20k starter allowance rivals. This barn has heated up of late with three wins last week and this filly has a tactical advantage on her main rivals in this field. #2 JANE’S HEIR ran two very strong turf races at Churchill in June before shipping up here for trainer Michael Lauer. She was a clear 2nd in a race taken off the turf last time out and is a major threat if this race is taken off the turf. On the grass, she will be a late threat should the pace materialize. #8 EDIE has won two straight and 3 of her last 4 for this barn on the turf. She came through a tight spot on the rail to win last time out and seems to have found the right class level for trainer Chris Englehart. This strong barn is just 11% with turfers exiting victories, good for a $0.85 ROI, which is far from ideal. DIRT: 10-2-3-6

Race 5-
1st #5 KLEPTOCRAT
2ND #3 KEEP RIGHT
3RD #9 SENSO
#5 KLEPTOCRAT moves back down the class ladder after facing NY bred company here on July 23. She was no match for impressive winner Girlaboutown in her last start and a slow break from the inside hurt this filly’s chances. She rushed up along the inside to contest the pace before tiring late, and now draws a post in the middle of the pack. The return to the claiming ranks will greatly help her chances as well. #3 KEEP RIGHT was beaten at 2-1 in her last start, when she checked in a distant 2nd to Miss Electronica. That filly was 3rd behind Kleptocrat when they met on June 12, and this gal has repeatedly disappointed at short prices. She will be dangerous if able to show more speed, and a swift workout 8 days ago portends more early interest. #9 SENSO gets a rider change to the meet’s top pilot as she goes 2nd off a claim by David Jacobson. She is drawn favorably on the outside and will be in line to benefit if the pace is contested today. This high percentage stable heated up last week with a pair of wins after a slow start to the meet.
Race 6-
1st #9 HEAR THE FOOTSTEPS
2ND #1 GREAT ATTACK
3RD #10 STRONG IMPACT
DIRT:
1ST #13 EASTWOOD
2ND #7 POWER WORLD
3RD #12 ZEE BROS
#9 HEAR THE FOOTSTEPS returns to the 5.5 furlong trip that yielded his maiden win some years ago. He has been in strong form of late and was a solid 3rdbehind wire-to-wire winner Spring to the Sky in his last outing. That race was run over a very firm turf course that favored speed, which worked against this son of Read the Footnotes. With a stronger setup, he can be a major late threat. #1 GREAT ATTACK made his first start for Tony Dutrow last time and finished a game 2nd to the aforementioned Spring to the Sky. He has shown incredible turf sprinting ability in the past and can reach his potential in this strong new barn. The inside post will enable jockey Rosie Napravnik to save ground from the outset. #10 STRONG IMPACT has held his form for a lengthy period of time and was an even third last time out behind Great Attack. He is drawn outside, which will put him in range to stalk the pace and pounce when ready. His best races have come here at Saratoga and he’ll offer value in this spot. DIRT: 13-7-12-14
Race 7-
1st #2 SUPERIOR SARAH
2ND #4 ISABELLE
3RD #1 SPINIT TO WINIT
#2 SUPERIOR SARAH is back against NY breds after spending much of the fall and winter against open company. She has competed well against tougher competition on a regular basis and has run well when fresh in the past. This is a particularly soft NY bred N2X event and she is drawn favorably to be involved from the opening bell. #4 ISABELLE is a stakes winner who is facing older horses today. She was a non-factor last time out in the Victory Ride, but a slow break from the gate hurt her chances that afternoon. Speed is her best weapon, and she is quick enough to get control from the outset. Her ability to handle a wet surface adds to her appeal. #1 SPINIT TO WINIT goes 3rd off a layoff today and has run two improved races of late. She is an off the pace type who’ll benefit if the early tempo is contested, and this gal has run well on wet surfaces in the past. The blowout winner in her last start is headed for graded stakes company again and this filly was a clear 2nd behind that rival.
Race 8-
1st #7 AESTHETIQUE
2ND #1 THATZA WRAP
3RD #10 TAKEOFF YOUR HAT
DIRT:
1st #2 ROYAL JEST
2ND #7 AESTHETIQUE
3RD #14 WISDOM OF OZ
#7 AESTHETIQUE was beaten at odds of even money last time out when given a tentative ride by Jose Lezcano. She wound up third with some trouble in that event and now returns from a brief freshening for a trainer who picked up his first win here last week. If this gal shows the speed she has in the past, she’ll be a major player from start to finish. #1 THATZA WRAP found trouble along the way when 4th last time out behind the Willow U and Aesthetique. She returns from a brief layoff and has run two solid turf races in as many tries. The pace should be conducive to a late running type and this filly will offer value at the windows once again. #10 TAKEOFF YOUR HAT found trouble late in her last start when attempting to rally from off the pace. She returns on short rest for a veteran trainer and will benefit from the return to allowance company after facing stakes foes last week. This is another who’ll be in line to make noise late with a cleaner trip. DIRT: 2-7-14-3
Race 9-
1st #2 TIGHTEND TOUCHDOWN
2ND #8 BOLD THUNDER
3RD #6 SPRING TO THE SKY
DIRT:
1st #2 TIGHTEND TOUCHDOWN
2ND #5 DADS CAPS
3RD #7 SANDY’Z SLEW
#2 TIGHTEND TOUCHDOWN nearly pulled off an upset in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. He has come back from a layoff in top form and should have won the Parx Dash last time out. Jockey Kendrick Carmouche asked him to make two moves in that affair and he wound up 2nd beaten a nostril by veteran campaigner Ben’s Cat. He is quick enough to get command from the start and is a winner over a wet surface should this race be rained off the turf. #8 BOLD THUNDER ran a bang-up race in the aforementioned Parx Dash when he was out of the gate slowly before rushing up to reach contention. He tired late and has proven that 5 furlongs is more or less his limit. However, he will offer value off of that strong performance and is drawn favorably outside of the other speed. Whether #6 SPRING TO THE SKY can handle a damp turf course is the main question today, as he has taken two straight on very firm turf. He has won both of those races in wire-to-wire fashion and can be a major threat from the opening bell today. DIRT: 2-5-7-8
Race 10-
1st #7 TWO SEVENTEEN
2ND #3 SOUTHERN BLESSING
3RD #6 BEAU WHO
#7 TWO SEVENTEEN returns from a lengthy layoff for trainer Bruce Levine and will race for a tag for the first time since his debut way back in November of 2011. This 5YO was unimpressive in three starts last year as a 4YO, but each of those engagements came against much tougher competition. Levine is 23% with dirt sprinters coming back from 180+ day breaks, good for a $2.08 ROI. That leads you to believe he can fire a big shot today. #3 SOUTHERN BLESSINGhas shown nothing on wet tracks in three prior tries, but is once again taking a major class drop today. This high percentage barn scored an upset win here on Sunday with juvenile firster So Cal and is sure to get rolling at this meet in due time. #6 BEAU WHO goes 2nd off a layoff and drops in class as well. He was close to a strong pace on a wet track last time out and can be dangerous if he relaxes a bit more in the opening stages.
SARATOGA 2014 STATS:   221-51-41-30                    $372.80

By Dave Litfin
BEST BET: Isabelle (7th race)
First Race

1. Selection Sunday2. Syros3. Wantan

SELECTION SUNDAY has beaten four of Wednesday's rivals at three different venues since being transformed into a steeplechaser this season; went well over this course three weeks ago. SYROS and WANTAN were well behind the top choice on firm turf July 23; both won over soft ground at Great Meadow on May 3, so any rain could be a potential plus for either or both.
Second Race

1. Broadway Bay2. Warrior's Hero3. Celebrate We Will

BROADWAY BAY trailed by a dozen lengths early and rallied past six rivals in a promising debut; stretching out to seven furlongs should suit. WARRIOR'S HERO battled for the lead throughout and just missed when last in against New York-breds at Belmont; right there to stretch vs. open company in slop 13 days ago. CELEBRATE WE WILL, WILDNITEATTHEOPERA and IMPOSING FIGURE alll have siblings that earned $167K or more.
Third Race

1. Sheriffa2. Desert Valentine3. The Lost Tigress

SHERIFFA has been in the money six of seven starts, and comes off a bullet workout following near-miss to multiple winner Bridgetta (see 7th race); may have found right spot to get over the hump. DESERT VALENTINE may prove a prescient claim after winning debut by lengthy margin over $20,000 maidens; fits on numbers despite class hike. THE LOST TIGRESS is third off a layoff and switches back to dirt; solidly backed for maiden win with blinkers & Lasix added.
Fourth Race

1. Ginny's Grey2. Edie3. Jane's Heir

If switched to dirt (at 1 1/8 miles), GINNY'S GREY would be going first off a claim for Bruce Brown, who won with another Kentucky shipper, Conspiracy ($6.90), going long last Wednesday; consistent sort. Otherwise, EDIE has beaten some of these winning both of her starts this year; lone entrant to have won over the local course. JANE'S HEIR chased a front-end winner's slow pace in muddy off-the-turfer here July 27; versatile filly posted new top Beyer on turf a month earlier. REVEALING MOMENT stretches out after showing improvement when switched to turf downstate; fast work on main track for new barn.
Fifth Race

1. Keep Right2. Penella3. Kleptocrat

KEEP RIGHT couldn't seriously menace wire-to-wire winner Miss Electronica, but saved the place over PENELLA when brought back for first start in seven weeks; bullet work last week for breeder-owner with six meet wins. Penella steadied early and narrowly missed second vs. the choice in an improved try with blinkers on. KLEPTOCRAT gets off the rail after breaking in rear half of field both starts; beat Miss Electronica when second in bow for this price.
Sixth Race

1. Eastwood2. Great Attack3. Strong Impact

If switched to dirt, EASTWOOD would be entering off a sharp try when run down final yards by Confrontation, who upped record to 5 for 7 taking N3x allowance condition last week; would have to catch ZEE BROS, who wintered in Dubai after setting/forcing the pace in several U.S. stakes at 3. Otherwise, GREAT ATTACK chased in-form Spring to the Sky (see 9th race) and held second overSTRONG IMPACT in stake opening weekend; they get some class relief breaking from the rail and outside respectively, and both have won on non-firm turf.
Seventh Race

1. Isabelle2. Here's Zealicious3. Superior Sarah

Last week's Hall Of Fame inductee Alex Solis can move closer to the 5,000-win plateau with ISABELLE, a filly he scored with twice at Belmont on fast and wet tracks; major drop in class after being outsprinted through blistering fractions in Grade 3 stake. HERE'S ZEALICIOUS comes off a throw-out race two weeks ago spotting the field several lengths at the break; won three straight with peak Beyers prior to that. SUPERIOR SARAH makes first Saratoga start since 2012 Union Avenue, and first ever for a tag; last two on wet tracks were tough spots, particularly Dec. 19 chasing Grade 2 winner La Verdad.
Eighth Race

1. Takeoff Your Hat2. Aesthetique3. Chrysolite

TAKEOFF YOUR HAT lost considerable ground, yet was able to finish second on yielding turf at Aqueduct while making her first start in over three months; right there to stretch three weeks later vs. Grade 1-placed Summer Solo, back quickly after lacking room late in N.Y. Stallion nine days ago. AESTHETIQUE broke to the lead, was steadied dropping back to fourth, and finished with good energy to wind up a length behind WILLOW U second time out this year; beaten choice may rate another chance. CHRYSOLITEwould be okay on wet dirt (at 7 furlongs) in the event of a surface switch, and could have a better stretch punch if indeed shortening up from decent try in muddy route over the track; stretch threat on grass based on maiden win erasing 15-length deficit.
Ninth Race

1. Dads Caps2. Tightend Touchdown3. Spring to the Sky

Carter Handicap winner DADS CAPS would find himself in a favorable situation if the Troy Stakes is rained off to the main track. Otherwise, TIGHTEND TOUCHDOWN comes off a win in the Pa. Governor's Cup followed by a placing to Ben's Cat in the Parx Dash, just as last year when a game second in the Fiddlers Patriot opening weekend; given more time between races this time, okay with rain-softened ground or even a switch to main track. SPRING TO THE SKY has been in career best form recently, and likes to hear his feet rattle on very firm going; debut win was in mud at Belmont by nearly 10 lengths.
Tenth Race

1. Perfect Disco2. Southern Blessing3. Beau Who

PERFECT DISCO has run only once since last winter, when a clear second early at Belmont chasing Sense of Peace, who returned to win his N3L claiming condition two starts later; reprise of that performance would be sufficient. SOUTHERN BLESSING makes third start of the year after Beyer pair-up on sealed wet tracks; lowered 50% in price after bobbling at break as drop down winner Mr. O'Leary shook loose early. BEAU WHO argued the pace between horses and held gamely for second to repeater In the Dark for this price June 6; makes second start off a freshening and exits same heat as Southern Blessing when wide.

3 inches of rain in the forecast for Tuesday night/ Wednesday, but as of now, the steeplechase race is still on.
SARATOGA

RACE 1 : People have recently asked me :"Hey Coxy, how are you killin' it on the steeplechase
races ?" Or, ahhhh, "What's the key to a successful meet ?" Well, I can tell you what NOT to
do---that's heading to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund Karaoke Night before your
column is do...ooofa. Nonetheless, we're back on the jumpers today, and we're diggin' the
#6 WANTAN ( Arg ) in this spot. This Richard Hendricks trainee merely split the field in local
debut, but prior to that was doing some nice things over the hedges, having hit the board in
12 of 13. Getting decent odds today due to the recent mediocre effort, and did run 2nd here
in an open house race a million years ago. #7 SELECTION SUNDAY appears the best of the
rest, with 2 seconds and a win to start out jumping career. Jones aboard for 6 length tally on
the 17th of May. #5 SYROS gets in light at 146 and that should aid in landing a share.

Del Mar - 8/13

Race 11.Blackford2.Local One Thirty3.Ontology
#2 BLACKFORD  missed by just a half up at Pleasanton when facing $25,000 foes. Was claimed that day and now drops below claiming price while switching back to poly, a surface he's 2 for 6 over. Needs a swift pace to close into, and I think he'll get it. #7 LOCAL ONE THIRTY ( Named after the plumbers union, I presume ) faded badly after  wide trip facing tougher in local debut. Three starts prior to that, however, were pretty decent ( 71-70-79 ) and has a routing win on the synthetic as well. #1 ONTOLOGY is the obvious class of the field, with several graded stakes attempts ( including a recent placing ). $210,000 purchase plummets today,so caveat emptor.
Race 21. Lethal Story2.Tangelo3.Susan B Good
Extremely tight affair for maidens routing on the lawn in today's 2nd and we're gonna side with a price. The #3 LETHAL STORY is an excellent "pro rated figures play". In short, what that means, is that her last race on the poly was by far the best of her career, and if you were to pro rate that to her best turf figure, it is as good, if not better than most signed on. The price is right compared to the rest, and this one is an excellent "across the board" play. ( Rare that I say that. ) #2TANGELO displayed decent early foot coming down the hill in 2 starts @ Arcadia, and now may get the opportunity to relax a little bit, which can sometimes make all the difference in the world. #7 SUSAN B GOOD is as logical as any to round out the top 3.   OFF TURF : 7-6-2-4-3
Race 31.Little Jerry2.Jomelo3.What Goes Around
#3 LITLE JERRY flopped in local poly debut, but that can be forgiven as it was his 2nd off the L/O, and aside from that start, displays a 6:2-1-1 boxscore on the synthetic. Drops in for a tag for the first time in 19 outings, and as Tyler gets the mount back,  it's worth noting his 1 for 5 record aboard this gelding, including 5 superfecta finishes. #1 JOMELO was claimed for 50 big ones two back, and can after just beating just one home next out, is entered for 36% less than the price claimed. Likes the fake stuff, and Hess/Sleepy are 50% better in tandem than when apart. #7 WHAT GOES AROUND has hit the exacta in all 4 poly attempts, and has speed to be a factor.
Race 41.Perfect Set2.Tiz Futurity3.Vibrato Jazz
#5 PERFECT SET is a nice lil' K.I.S.S play---best last race speed figure ( at this level, no less ), a sharp work since that race, and a trainer 29% off the claim. #1 TIZ FUTURITY finished 7 lengths behind top choice in last, but now moves in from the 7 hole to the rail, and it's worth mentioning 'Tiz is 4:1-0-1 from the wood. #9 VIBRATO JAZZ tries synthetic for the first time, but drops to a lifetime low today, and may wake up.
Race 51.Pure 2.Redshirt 3.Awesome Diamond ( Ire )
#3 PURE has the 2nd best Beyer speed figure in the field ( 59 ) and Cassidy's win rate improves from 10 to 16% with 2nd time starters. Although the sire is still kinda unproven w/ poly runners, we're gonna stick with this one @ a decent M.L. price. ( "Ride her 'til she bucks you, or don't ride at all."---Tin Cup ) #4REDSHIRT outran her odds in debut when running a decent 3rd after breaking tardily beneath Smith, who rides this one back. Stretches out today, and Distorted Humor breeding says potential is there for improvement on the stretchout. #10 AWESOME DIAMOND ( IRE ) finished third when debuting on the local sod 2 weeks ago, and $625,000 purchase should be able to handle the switch to poly just fine.
Race 61.Benba2.Smogcutter3.Frensham
#9 BENBA has speed and steady figures, and in a race devoid of much early hoof for turf routers, may take this bunch wire to wire. #1 SMOGCUTTER , a recent maiden breaker off a 9 month L/O when sprinting at Los Al, tries the sod for the first time today, and 333 turf Tomlinson says the sod could be to his liking. Trainer 2 for 9 with these 2nd off the extended layoff types. With the exception of one nightmarish start, the #3 FRENSHAM has improved with each and every turf try, and we'll chunk him in @ 12-1 today. Off Turf : 6-7-9-5-3
Race 71.Mr. Sexy2.Wine Police3.No Jet Lag
#3 MR. SEXY was a convincing winner in a local turf dash right here last out, and with turf sprints being abandoned for the rest of the meet, Papaprodromou tries the next best thing...poly. Was 53-1 in that score, and while I hate "missing the wedding, and going to the funeral", 10-1 M.L. price is still nice enough. #4WINE POLICE put up a pair of "94's" on the poly this time last year, but hasn't gotten the opportunity to give it another whirl since then. Lost all chance at the onset of last, but definitely has the back class to beat these, especially if able to recapture some of that poly form. #6 NO JET LAG broke his maiden over the synthetic stuff in Great Britain more than a year ago, and scorched back to back bullet breezes over this strip recently. Factor.  BEATABLE FAVORITE : #5CARACORTADO is making just his 3rd start in the last 32 months, and although he boasts a 6:4-0-1 record over the poly, we can't enthusiastically back a 2-1 shot with obvious health issues.
Race 81.Troy Story2.Steppingood3.Itsgettinhotinhere
Bad race to end the day. #4 TROY STORY, oh for 23 lifetime, drops, cuts back, and goes turf to poly. Meekest of choices. #1 STEPPINGOOD is eligible to improve today in his 2nd start off an elongated layoff, and also drops a few pegs. Highest poly # in the field. #10 ITSGETTINHOTINHERE was claimed for 50 large 3 back, showed little in special weight company, and is now entered for the price claimed. Possibility his form's been hidden, and connections could be laying this one over.
